It’s a stainless love, an unbridled passion. In the name of music. The great event programmed for Sunday 3rd of September in Veruno, with the longed for Procol Harum concert, legendary English rock band, lighted up the memories of many citizens of Novara. Since 1996 the Corriere di Novara follows closely the adventures abroad of some fellow citizens at the court of Procol Harum in occasion of some special concert with the orchestra and also of the conventions that fans worldwide periodically organise. Persons of every age and social and working backgrounds, often themselves hobby musicians, that perform personal arrangements of the Procol Harum songs, with the participation of some of the components of the band. We remember among the others lawyers Antonio Costa Barbé, Giorgio Naldi and Stefano Bottacchi, doctor Alberto Gallarini, businessman Guido Fragiacomo, Mauro Battisti and the musician Elizabeth Pellegrini. «They’re always unforgettable experiences – comments Costa Barbé, who during these years collected really many of them -. To meet again some old friends coming from all over the world with the same eagerness of playing with passion and commitment each time has brought almost a gust of magic. And the fact that musicians such as Gary Brooker, Geoff Whitehorn and Dave Ball took the stage with us, simply as if it was nothing, and chatted and “played” with us serenely and naturally has been incredible and exciting. In 1999 I gifted Gary Brooker the chord-chart of “Dead Man’s Dream”: he hadn’t performed this very chordally complex song in many years, but I had transcribed it in the far 1971 to play it with Fuochi Fatui at the [theater] Borsa di Novara, during an evening held for the ANFFAS in front of Oscar Luigi Scalfaro [to be president of the Italian Republic]. So after “reviewing” it Brooker started to occasionally play it again at concerts. What a satisfaction!». Always vivid memories. «Or when Geoff Whitehorn, guitar player with Procol Harum, – continues the musician lawyer – played during the event “Il grande rock contro la SLA” that has been held into the Castle of Galliate in 2013 with the participations of Franco Taulino’s Beggars’ Farm, of Clive Bunker and Martin Barre from Jethro Tull, of prefect of Novara Franco Castaldo» After the performance in Veruno i Procol on Saturday September 9th will play in Berlin in one of the most important locations, the Admiralspalast, almost 1.800 seats since long sold out: the young organist from Turin Carlo “Jack” Ponissi, that lives there since some time, has organised a musical aftershow that will see the participations of friends of PH coming from all Europe. Antonio Costa Barbé, being member of the Lions Novara Ticino, will be present and the invitation for the aftershow (taking place in a renowned Italian restaurant, Casa Italia) has been extended to Berlin members of the Lions. The memory album will then be enriched by new memories…
È un amore inossidabile, una passione sfrenata. Nel segno della musica. Il grande evento in programma domenica 3 settembre a Veruno, con l’atteso concerto dei Procol Harum, leggendaria rock band inglese, ha riacceso i ricordi di tanti novaresi. Dal 1996 il Corriere di Novara segue con attenzione le trasferte di alcuni concittadini alla corte dei Procol Harum in occasione di qualche speciale concerto con l’orchestra e anche delle convention che i fan di tutto il mondo organizzano periodicamente. Persone di ogni età ed estrazione sociale e lavorativa, spesso musicisti loro stessi per diletto, che eseguono personali arrangiamenti delle canzoni dei Procol Harum, con la partecipazione di qualche componente del gruppo. Ricordiamo tra gli altri gli avvocati Antonio Costa Barbé, Giorgio Naldi e Stefano Bottacchi, il dottor Alberto Gallarini, gli imprenditori Battisti e Guido Fragiacomo, la musicista Elizabeth Pellegrini. «Sono sempre esperienze indimenticabili – commenta Costa Barbé che in questi anni ne ha collezionate veramente tante -. Ritrovare alcuni vecchi amici da tutto il mondo con la stessa voglia di suonare con passione e impegno ha portato ogni volta quasi una ventata di magia. E il fatto che musicisti come Gary Brooker, Geoff Whitehorn e Dave Ball siano saliti sul palco con noi, in tutta semplicità, e abbiano chiacchierato e “giocato” serenamente e con naturalezza è stato incredibile ed emozionante. Nel 1999 regalai a Gary Brooker la traccia-spartito di “Dead Man’s Dream”: non suonava da anni questo brano dagli accordi molto complessi, ma io lo avevo trascritto fin dal lontano 1971 eseguendolo con i Fuochi Fatui al Borsa di Novara (in una serata per l‘ANFFAS alla presenza di Oscar Luigi Scalfaro).
Così dopo averla “ripassata” Brooker ha ripreso di tanto in tanto a suonarla nei concerti. Una bella soddisfazione!». Ricordi sempre vivi. «Come quando Geoff Whitehorn, chitarrista dei Procol Harum, – ancora l’avvocato musicista – ha suonato durante tutto l’evento “Il grande rock contro la SLA” che si è tenuto al Castello di Galliate nel 2013 e ha visto la partecipazione dei Beggars’ Farm con Franco Taulino, di Clive Bunker e Martin Barre dei Jethro Tull, del prefetto di Novara Franco Castaldo». Dopo l’esibizione di Veruno i Procol suoneranno a Berlino in una delle location più rinomate (l’Admiralpalast, quasi 1800 posti sold out da tempo) sabato 9 settembre: per l’occasione il giovane organista torinese Carlo ‘Jack’ Ponissi, che vive lì da tempo, ha organizzato un aftershow musicale cui prenderanno parte amici dei PH provenienti da tutta Europa. Antonio Costa Barbé, membro del Lions Novara Ticino, sarà presente e l’invito per l’aftershow (che si terrà presso un rinomato ristorante italiano, Casa Italia) e’ stato esteso ad esponenti dei Lions berlinesi. L’album si arricchirà così di nuovi ricordi…
